Penny and
Saint
Jenny
|
Penny is a beautiful young lady; a yellow lab with a playful disposition.
Penny was injured when she was hit by a car and after a visit to the
emergency clinic Penny was brought to the Sanctuary by a friend. The
injury to her spine was severe and at first it was thought that Penny would
not walk again on her own. Although Penny thrived socially in the
company of the many dogs at the Sanctuary, Pam and Heidi sought better
medical treatment to offer Penny the chance to run and play like the others.
In February of 2006, Pam brought Penny to Best Friends Animal Society in
Utah to try the hydrotherapy pool (see
Best Friends original story).
St. Francis' first “Saint,”
Jenny Laughlin contacted the Sanctuary soon after Penny's story appeared on
the BFAS site. Saint Jenny said that not only did she want to give Penny a
lifetime home, she would continue to provide the hydrotherapy that would
help her heal. Jenny, who lives in Massachusetts had a black lab named
Mollie with similar challenges and knew the benefits this treatment could
provide. Pam loaded up Penny and drove her to her new home in April
2006. We are thankful to Best Friends Animal Society's Cathy Scott for
continuing to write about Jenny and Penny
(see
her follow-up story).
We continue to talk with Jenny and get Penny updates and as we do we will
share them with you.
We are so grateful to our first official
Saint
Jenny! |

Jake |
Jake's person contacted the Sanctuary for
help because Jake was found to be deaf at the age of eight weeks.
Jake was rather hyper-active and found his way out of his yard pretty
regularly. This habit was particularly treacherous for Jake as his
family lived in a hurricane ravaged area of the Gulf Region where there
was a lot of work going on, including the demolition of blighted
housing. At first, Jake had a tough time adjusting to his new yard
and his new friends. Now Jake (who is an Australian Cattle Dog) has two special buddies (Cypress the
Cattle Dog pup and Kali the Chocolate Lab) who are helping him find his
way. Jake will need training with a specialist who can teach him
sign language. If you already know sign language and are willing
to share your skills and your home with this special boy, please contact
our Adoption Coordinator at
pampet@bellsouth.net for
further details. |

Maxwell |
Maxwell has quite a history with St. Francis! When Max was 18
months old
he was adopted by Linda and Al from the Sanctuary; Max's mom and aunt
were brought in as strays and he was one of the first puppies to be
born in the Dog Barn. Linda and Al, like so many people during the
hurricane, chose to stay at home with their animals. When
the streets began to flood Al had no choice but to move Linda (who has
Multiple Sclerosis), Maxwell and two cats to the attic. When Linda
and Al were airlifted from their rooftop they had to leave the animals
behind. Linda and Al immediately contacted us and miraculously we
were able to rescue Maxwell from the house. One of the cats,
Flambeau, was later found by Al. Both Maxwell and Flambeau stayed
with us here at the Sanctuary until April when they were reunited with
Al and Linda. Maxwell is scheduled for knee surgery in June and
the Sanctuary will be paying for his medical care. Although
Maxwell is not available for adoption, your generous
Saint
membership will assist with the cost of his care. |

Blue |
A
friend of the Sanctuary discovered our little girl Blue in a shelter and
brought her to us. Blue is a 4 to 5 year-old Russian Blue cat who
requires daily medication for her severe arthritis. When Blue is
on her medication she is comfortable and happy and gets along well with
the other cats in her room. All Blue wants from her Forever Person
is a safe and loving environment, and a gentle hand to administer her
powdered medication. |

Lacey |
This
pretty-girl is Lacey and she's about 4 years old. Lacey was
brought to a vet after a friendly stranger witnessed her being hit by a
car. Because Lacey's owner was unknown the veterinarian did not
treat her and was only able to give her a safe and supervised recovery
area. A staff member of the clinic contacted us and Lacey started
a new life here at the Sanctuary; currently living with Heidi at the
Cottage. Lacey's neurological impairment causes her to walk and
run in circles so potty training her was quite a challenge (she's
trained now). Despite her permanent condition, our girl gets along
well with other dogs and would be great in a home with older children
who understand her limitations. |

Jōb |
Jōb
was found wandering and was turned over to a local shelter. He was
blind and his hair so matted that it was difficult to determine his
breed. We agreed to make Jōb our own and provide him with a much
needed glaucoma surgery. Although the surgery did relieve Jōb's
pain, he will remain blind. Don't go feeling too sorry for him
though because Jōb runs and plays just as wildly as the other dogs in
his yard and when he runs into or off of something he picks himself up
and runs again! Of course we will continue to care for Jōb but a
new "forever home" with a human who needs a cozy foot warmer would suit
him just fine! |

Stevie |
Stevie, a 2 year-old female, has been a resident of the Sanctuary since
early 2005 and she lives in Elvis' Room. Another rescue
organization brought her to us. Stevie is blind and was probably
born that way. Stevie is affectionate and clean and has the cutest
habit of napping on her back with her legs straight in the air! We
will continue to provide a safe and loving environment for Stevie in
Elvis' room and we know she will thrive in an indoor-only
"forever home" as well. |

Precious |
This
is one loveable young lady! Precious was owner-surrendered and
came to live at the Sanctuary in 2003. She is a full-bred
Catahoula who was born without eyes. Precious has learned her
large yard and her yard-mates and gets along as well as any sighted dog
when she's in familiar surroundings. It truly is amazing to watch
Precious interact! Precious is looking for that special person who
wants a big, loveable family dog. Precious needs a little extra
attention with getting to know her boundaries and would love a family
with other pets (as long as she gets to meet them first!).
Precious' sight condition is permanent and your kind donations will help
us keep her comfortable and healthy until she finds her "forever home." |
